1st Chalkboard Installation - May 28, 2011

Home Depot + Dollar Store the night before the project = 4' x 8' board, chalkboard paint, white paint, stencils, chalk, containers for chalk + butterfly stickers. Day of project = drill, handful of screws + helpers.

The Chalkboard Project

In May of 2011 my kids and I had one of our usual "urban adventure" days, and we were disheartened to see that one of the areas we walked through a lot had gotten very run-down and was full of litter, broken glass, etc.

This area is mainly full of 2 things - empty buildings and empty lots. So I decided to do 2 things in return - 1. organize a clean up of the area and 2. make a big 4' x 8' chalkboard to hang on an empty building to start inspiring people to think about what they wanted to see from our city.

How can we make our community better? That's what this project is all about. Please get involved by writing your wish for our city on the chalkboard, then let's get together and turn those visions into reality!

I have been photo-documenting the chalkboard since May 2011 when we put it up. It has become somewhat of a routine at this point with my kids, and several friends have come with me as well. Sometimes it fills up several times in a week. Many times people stop to chat or ask questions. Cleaning it has become like a sort of therapy for me, and it's something I very much enjoy.

I will be making a new chalkboard (before the end of Nov. '11) for a vacant downtown lot to inspire thoughts and ideas about what it should be. Baby steps...
